Affordable Architectural LED Lighting Goes Mainstream

Posted by Rob Gemmell on Jul 8, 2014 5:37:00 AM

The personal computer. Computer Aided Design. The iPhone. These are inventions that have changed the way that professional designers and architects work and create. For the most part, they have been beneficial to the built environment and paved the way for other innovations in this and related fields.

The light bulb is another invention that has evolved over time, and LEDs, the solid state electronic replacement for bulbs, are now clearly the big wave hitting the beach. However, the affordability of LED lighting has been a significant challenge to sell for lighting designers and architects - not to mention the general public.

How Inspired Product Design Can Make LED Lighting Even Better

Posted by Rob Gemmell on Apr 4, 2014 8:13:00 AM

The age of the LEDs is here. It wasn't too long ago that architects and lighting designers were expected to be more concerned with form than function, because lighting functionally just didn’t change that much form year to year. Now however, as designers are more keen than ever to figure out how to harness the power of LED technology with forms and functions scarcely envisioned even 5 years ago.

Ever since the incandescent phase-out was announced years ago, the conversation to solid-state lighting has shifted from beginners' hiccups with efforts in many directions to convergence between form and function. Now, LEDs are becoming beautiful to look at compared to the high-tech or holdover designs based on the predecessors that dominated the industry for decades.

George Mieling: IALD Conference and Future of Lighting Design Insights

Posted by Rob Gemmell on Oct 13, 2013 8:36:00 AM

Lighting design can be a complex line of work. While many designers got into the profession due to their interest in aesthetics, few realized that they would also have to become technological pioneers. With the recent swarm of technological advancements in LED lighting, and fresh thinking from lighting entrepreneurs like George Mieling, COO and co-founder of Vode Lighting, recent innovations require a new way of thinking.

According to Mieling, the move toward a new light source, being solid state lighting, is happening at - as some would say - light speed. The changes are becoming swifter as updates and innovations are occurring continuously and spreading rapidly in the lighting community and marketplace. These speedy advancements, as well as some concerns about it, were discussed at-length at the recent International Association of Lighting Designers Conference in Montreal.

Office space lighting may have been somewhat drab until recently (thinking fluorescent bulbs?), but with low-profile linear lighting, all of that is changing for forward-minded design professionals.
