LEDs might require lighting designers' clients to dig a little further into their pocketbooks, but there are numerous reasons why lighting designers and architects should stick to their high reverence for LED lighting - and color quality is definitely one of them.

One of the best reasons to make the switch to an LED lighting system is the major benefit you can achieve regarding color quality and illumination. In the lighting industry, getting the appropriate amount of color flexibility in your fixtures can be a challenge, especially if you are a lighting designer or architect that is being paid to light up a space that relies on some strict parameters, such as those applicable to art, retail and hospitality venues.

Scott Yu Reflects on IALD Enlighten Conference 2013

Scott Yu, Vode Lighting Co-Founder and Creative Director, doesn't hesitate to compare the shift in LED lighting design to some of the biggest technological advancements the world has ever seen.

After reflecting on his time spent in a Victorian house built in 1892 in San Francisco that still had gas pipe for lighting on-premises, he stated that the movement toward LED lights from incandescent bulbs isn't too shy of a comparison from gas-powered light moving to Edison's first flip of the switch with electricity. Obviously, some big things are ahead for lighting designers, and Yu was eager to talk about them after returning from the International Association of Lighting Designers Conference in Montreal.

George Mieling: IALD Conference and Future of Lighting Design Insights

Lighting design can be a complex line of work. While many designers got into the profession due to their interest in aesthetics, few realized that they would also have to become technological pioneers. With the recent swarm of technological advancements in LED lighting, and fresh thinking from lighting entrepreneurs like George Mieling, COO and co-founder of Vode Lighting, recent innovations require a new way of thinking.


According to Mieling, the move toward a new light source, being solid state lighting, is happening at - as some would say - light speed. The changes are becoming swifter as updates and innovations are occurring continuously and spreading rapidly in the lighting community and marketplace. These speedy advancements, as well as some concerns about it, were discussed at-length at the recent International Association of Lighting Designers Conference in Montreal.
