How lighting systems can relate to photoperiodism in humans

The human body is a complex and wonderful thing that is completely in tune with the environment that surrounds us, even though we sometimes try to block it out. In some buildings, lighting systems and the flow of natural light simply doesn't attain the adequate amount we need.

Being shunned away from light is a relatively new phenomenon in human history. In a modern society that is constantly exposing individuals to more and more to artificial light - especially fixtures like fluorescent lighting and incandescent bulbs - it's no wonder that conditions like seasonal affective disorder and vitamin D deficiency have become a normal part of the lexicon.

There have been countless studies showing the effects that poor lighting - or the lack of it altogether - can have, but there are ways that architects and lighting designers can change that. Most people understand the balance of lighting and circadian rhythm, but few understand the process of photoperiodism, natural light and its important role in human health.

However, as animals who have spent millennia living by the rhythms of the sun's rays, this artificial option has definitely taken a toll on some individual's health and personal well-being. 

Because 8-hour day and night shifts are not going to stop anytime soon, the solution must come from the lighting source itself: In comes tunable lighting.

The sun doesn't provide the same level or even color of light throughout the day, so sitting under the same white light in an office, hotel or school can make you tired when you need to stay awake, or, conversely, too wound up when your body should be starting to relax. Tunable lighting mimics that natural ebb and flow of sunlight, working more symbiotically with your own circadian rhythms.

In addition to sweating off a few pounds at the gym or lowering your intake of sweets, turning the lights down low may help you reduce your calorie intake. According to a 2012 study originally published in Psychological Reports, dimmable commercial lighting design in conjunction with milder music can be used to get people to avoid wolfing down their meals, Reuters reported.

Now more than ever, it seems that there is a more intense focus on lighting systems, exposure to natural daylight, building design and their major impacts on human health.


According to The Washington Post, issues with sleep, moodiness and staying alert can all be traced back to your exposure to light, and the way that buildings are constructed has a lot to do with it. Even though linear lighting design has become very advanced over the years and does its best to mimic solar rays, there is just no question that sun exposure can't be duplicated.
